Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán is a Mexican drug lord who was the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world. He is often referred to as "El Chapo," which means "Shorty" in English, due to his 5'6" stature.
Guzmán was born in La Tuna, a rural town in the Sinaloa state of Mexico, in 1957. He began his criminal career in the 1980s, working for the Guadalajara Cartel before eventually taking over the Sinaloa Cartel in the early 1990s. He is known for his brutal tactics, including ordering countless murders and kidnappings to maintain control over his drug empire.
Guzmán was arrested multiple times and escaped from prison on two occasions, in 2001 and 2015. Following his 2015 escape, he was recaptured in 2016 and subsequently extradited to the United States to face drug trafficking and conspiracy charges.
In 2019, Guzmán was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He is currently serving his sentence at the United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility (ADX) in Florence, Colorado, known as the most secure prison in the United States.
